Welcome

Hello!

Welcome to my website! Whether you have Asperger’s, are a family member of someone with Asperger’s, an educator, employer, or anyone having contact with someone with Asperger’s, you have come to the right place.

Pull up a chair, make yourself comfortable, and let’s have a chat. I want to tell you about my new life journey that I am now on, which is not only to help others with Asperger’s, but to educate people about Asperger’s on a global scale. This might sound like some pretty lofty goals, but this is no stranger to me.

Let me tell you a bit about myself. I first heard of the word “Asperger’s” a little over two years ago. A co-worker had been having problems with her 6 year old son for several years, and decided to take him to a neuropsychologist for evaluation. Soon after, Lisa came to tell me that her son, Gavin, has Asperger’s Syndrome. “What’s that,” I asked. Lisa handed me some literature on it, and as I started to read I could not believe my eyes! I instantly realized that I have Asperger’s. The pieces of the puzzle of my life suddenly fell into place and completed the whole picture. That night I stopped at the bookstore and got every book about Asperger’s. After completing Dr. Tony Attwood’s THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO ASPERGER’S SYNDROME, I knew without a doubt that I have it. I then went for a formal diagnosis.

I’ve been working for the past 24 years as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist after graduating from Columbia University in New York City. Imagine the stress to an Aspie moving to mid-town Manhattan! During those 24 years, I spent 17 of them being bullied in the workplace because I was different, and even endless threats of being fired because I didn’t fit in. I talk about all those long years and how I fought back in my book ASPERGER’S SYNDROME: WHEN LIFE HANDS YOU LEMONS, MAKE LEMONADE.

Despite not knowing I had Asperger’s, I accomplished some pretty big and exciting goals I had set for myself. My Asperger’s Laser-Focus is what got me through to these achievements. From jumping horses over six-foot high fences in jumping competitions to spending time with the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, and getting a flight in an F-15 fighter jet, you can see that I accomplish what I set out to do.

So now, I have become a force to help my fellow Aspies, and to educate the world about our gift. Knowledge is power, and the more people understand what Asperger’s Syndrome is, the more power we will gain for our everyday lives.

I am honored to have been chosen by Dr. Tony Attwood and Craig Evans (AutismHangout.com) to participate in a global project which will result in a book entitled BEEN THERE. DONE THAT. TRY THIS. An Aspinaut’s Guide to Life on Planet Earth. It will be jam-packed with life’s wisdom from “older” Aspies who have “been there” and “done that,” and are now ready to give advice to younger Aspies to “try this!” Our ever-growing list of “Aspie Mentors” reads like a Who’s Who, and includes Dr. Temple Grandin, Dr. Stephen Shore, myself, and countless other Aspies who’ve made it. Please take a few minutes to participate in this global project by taking the survey by clicking here.

I am also now going to start having weekly live shows here on my website, where you can relax at home and join me on my topic of the week. I’d like to urge people to call in or email me your questions, and I’ll also be having guests on regularly as well. Showtime will be every Saturday at 1 pm Central Standard Time, beginning Saturday, August 4th. Just log onto my website and join the Live Stream. You can also now chat on my new Blog as well.

It’s great to have another friend, and I hope my site will become a regular stop to come visit. Get ready to change your life and feel like you belong, have friends, and empower yourself to a more successful and fuller life. No more will we feel like we’re from another planet- we belong here just like everyone else!

Hugs,
Anita
